A logo review almost never happens on the surface it'll actually live on. It gets approved on a laptop screen, at a comfortable size, on white or dark backgrounds chosen specifically to flatter it. Then it ships, and within a month it's expected to survive a rollup banner in direct sunlight, a WhatsApp display picture the size of a thumbnail, and a signboard painter working from a printed reference photo. Most marks were never built for that journey — and that's where identities quietly start to look cheap, even though nothing about the original design was wrong.
The five surfaces that actually matter
Before I finalize any mark, I test it against five real-world conditions, not five more mockups on a laptop:
- Favicon / app-icon size. Shrunk to 32px, does the mark still read as a shape, or does it collapse into a smudge? If detail disappears at that size, the logo has too much going on for its own good.
- Single-color reproduction. Strip all color and print it in flat black. A lot of "brand colors" are quietly doing the job the actual shape should be doing — remove them and see what's left standing.
- Large-format print. Rollup banners, signage, and vehicle branding reproduce at a scale where thin strokes, gradients, and fine kerning either hold up or visibly break. This is usually where budget identities fall apart first.
- Low-fidelity screens. A WhatsApp DP, a Facebook cover photo compressed twice, a POS receipt header — all of these degrade image quality aggressively. If the mark depends on a subtle gradient or drop shadow, it won't survive.
- Hand-reproduction. This one's specific to the local market: a signboard painter, a tailor embroidering a logo on staff uniforms, a printer manually setting up a plate. If a design can't be roughly reproduced by hand from a reference photo, it will get "translated" into something else without your input.
What this actually changes in the design process
In practice, this means simplifying earlier than feels comfortable. A mark with four colors becomes a mark with two, because the two-color version has to work as the fallback everywhere the four-color version can't reach. A wordmark with a decorative flourish gets tested at receipt-header size before it's ever considered finished — if it turns to noise there, the flourish goes, no matter how good it looked in the initial concept.
It also changes what "final deliverables" means. A logo file isn't done at one PNG and one vector — it needs a one-color version, a reversed (light-on-dark) version, a minimum-size guideline, and ideally a one-page cheat sheet the client can hand to any printer or vendor without needing you in the room. That last part matters more than people expect: most brand damage in this market doesn't happen because a designer did bad work, it happens three vendors later, when nobody has clear rules to follow.

A quick gut-check before you approve any mark
Five minutes with these questions will catch most of what a full audit would:
- Does it still read clearly at 32px, with no color at all?
- Would a signboard painter working from a printed photo get the shape roughly right?
- Is there a documented minimum size, so nobody accidentally shrinks it past legibility?
- Does a reversed (light-on-dark) version exist, or does someone have to improvise one on the spot?
- If the brand colors were removed entirely, is there still a recognizable shape underneath?
If you're answering "I'm not sure" more than once, that's not a sign the logo needs to be scrapped — it's a sign it needs a proper stress test before it gets printed on anything expensive.
The takeaway
A logo isn't finished when it looks good in Figma. It's finished when it still looks like your brand after five different surfaces have each tried to break it — and when the person reproducing it three steps removed from you still gets it right without having to guess.
